it puzzles me how a cane plantation owner can build up a small plantation of about 850 acres, fall into financial trouble, lose all of his crop and have his slaves liberated by the union army, never recover from these hardships, and have his house renovated 100 years later and named longfellow evengeline state historical park when neither longfellow nor evengeline were ever there. this is the puzzle. i suppose they had to name it something, but when you visit the park the connection is never made. there is a short film shown then the curtain dramatically rises and you are shepherded off to the house to be shown the house by a tour guide. we had visited other plantations and been very impressed, this one ... not so much. it was indeed pretty as you can see. the out buildings were reconstructions and no slave quarters were represented. but the reconstructed buildings had nice new metal roofs. hmmm anyhow, the price was right and it was a pretty day. i tried to find some live oak acorns but to no avail. i think the squirrels eat them all.
